All our crew are volunteers. We have a mixture of qualified tradesmen (mechanics) to healthcare staff to marketing specialists and all their time given to the team at the track is on a volunteer basis. They often leave their jobs on a Friday, fly into the race track and then leave on the Sunday night to return to their jobs. Register for Truck Driver - Casual On occasion we are needing a casual truck driver to take our transporter with two Top Doorslammers onboard over to the eastern states and to the Northern Territory. You will be away a week at a time and you are taking the truck back and forth dual driving with John Zappia. Register for Satellite Crew Positions all Locations Please read the information below before considering registering as race crew: The opportunity to be on a drag racing team is exciting and you are invited to register to help locally and interstate. Satellite Crew positions are volunteer and on occasion we can provide accommodation. Food and drinks are provided at the track covering lunches, dinners and snacks. Crew work is physically demanding, non-stop and the conditions can be pretty tough, especially working outside under the elements in tents and standing out on the track. The environment’s nature requires quickness, dexterity and power. Crew members are required to be in excellent physical condition to endure long, strenuous work hours amid race weekends in all weather conditions. You are required to have the ability to lift from a bending position 40kgs-50kgs without limitation. You are also required to lift weight above your head without limitation. Moreover, you should be capable of swiftly and accurately lifting and manoeuvring hefty objects. We also require you to be aware of your own health and safety and for those within your race team and the public. Our preference is for those with a mechanic, trade, engineering or racing driver experience and for those who have automotive racing crew experience. You will need an up to date Police Clearance Certificate when working as a crew member. John Zappia: Top Doorslammer Legend Discover the career of Australian drag racing icon John Zappia, the record-holding champion with a commanding 11 national Top Doorslammer titles. Explore his runs in the iconic Holden HQ Monaro and his quest for speed. JOHN ZAPPIA A Life Fueled by Speed: My Story Growing up in Fremantle, Western Australia, I was always a "rev-head" at heart. My passion for speed started early. I left South Fremantle High School to begin an apprenticeship as a Mechanical Fitter at ALCOA, becoming a fully qualified tradesman by the age of 19. My first hot car was an XU-1 Torana—a serious street machine back in the '70s. I have fond memories of cruising Fremantle on a Friday or Saturday night, just waiting for a drag. But the XU-1 wasn't fast enough. I soon moved on to a 4-door HQ Holden sedan, which I fitted with a 383 Chev engine, later replaced by a powerful 454. That car had so much grunt it would smoke the tires in any gear. I remember how insane it felt on the street when the Dominator carb's rear barrels kicked in. I eventually started a family and, for a time, opened my own small spray-painting business. It wasn't for me, though, so I went back to ALCOA as a Maintenance Fitter, where I had been for an additional 15 years. On the track, I'm known for a driving style that's full-throttle and fearless, often pushing the car to its limits with long, smoky burnouts and high-speed runs. Off the track, I'm a bit more quiet and unassuming. People often say I'm a paradox—a mild-mannered guy who drives like there's no tomorrow. I'm told I have an incredible memory for every run, every meeting, and every problem I've faced. More importantly, I have a deep respect for everyone who has helped me on this incredible journey. My life has always been about going fast and having plenty of power under the hood, and I'm grateful to everyone who has been a part of my story.
